2022 DOMENICA Chardonnay - Beechworth, Vic
Domenica is the project of Peter Graham, who previously worked for 13 years with the top winery in Beechworth. The 4 hectares vineyard is located six kilometres south west of Beechworth, adjacent to the renowned Warner vineyard, at an altitude of around 460 metres. The soil is granitic, and the exposure is varied, from steep southerly slopes for the chardonnay, to a gentler north easterly aspect for the Roussanne/Marsanne.
The Wine:
La Niña years are kind to grape growing in Beechworth bringing cooler, more even ripening conditions. Crop levels were a little lower due to early season hail.
Harvested across a ten day period in early March, offering a full flavour profile of the vineyard and lean granitic soil. Each lot was hand picked, lightly crushed and basket pressed. Fermentation occurred in a mix of small, medium or large format French oak barrels. Excitingly for this year, the new oak component is two 600L Stockinger demi-muids. These large, thick-staved barrels integrate seamlessly without overpowering the fruit expression of the vineyard.
The 2022 Chardonnay is a classic and refined wine in the style you’ve come to expect from Domenica.
