2000 Penfolds 'BIN 389' Cabernet Shiraz - SA
Considered by many as baby Grange Penfolds Bin 389 combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. The archetypal Australian red wine, Bin 389 has been described by Huon Hooke as The quintessential Penfolds red: dependable, still affordable, good to drink young, but with a terrific track record in the cellar. The 1998 Bin 389 is simply a classic. From an outstanding vintage that is standing the test of time easily, the Cabernet Shiraz is still showing rich and vibrant liquorice and plum aromas matched with mocha and malted oak flavours. Plentiful fruit is still at the fore providing a youthful feel to a wine well over a decade in the cellar. Superb!
Andrew Caillard MW:
“Deep red. Intense inky/licquorice/plummy/roasted meat/chocolaty aromas with hints of menthol/briar. A remarkably concentrated, richly flavoured wine with deep-set roasted/plummy/mocha fruit, underlying malty oak and plentiful ripe, chocolaty tannins. Some complex leathery/demi-glace notes beginning to appear. This is still very youthful and elemental for its age. It''s drinking well, but the best is yet to come. Outstanding vintage. “
